Double Dose of Decadence – Delicious Delay by Tara Quan and Liar Liar by Alexa Bourne

Liar, Liar

Okay, I have to admit the alliteration was too tempting to pass up (who thought I could get 5 Ds in a row?). If you’re a frequenter of this blog, you must know by now I have a new release today. My short and (more spicy than) sweet romance Delicious Delay is now available straight from the publisher (here) as well as from Amazon (here). It’s set in a Middle Eastern airport (I don’t specify which, but you should be able to guess). There’s an Arab hero, a red-headed heroine, and a ton of naughtiness. It’s priced at a mere $2.99, and did I mention Monday was my birthday *bats eyelashes*? (Click here to check out the excerpt)

And that, folks, is the extent of my self-promotional abilities. I actually prefer talking about other people’s books (as readers of my author interviews can probably tell). As such, I’m delighted to present the fabulous Alexa Bourne, whose Romantic Suspense Liar, Liar shares both my release date and cover artist (Tibbs Designs). It so happens that Delicious Delay may have never been published were it not for Alexa. You see, I wrote Delicious Delay in response to a call for submission from Decadent Publishing’s Tease line, for which Alexa has written more than one book. I actually perused her back list quite a bit before I decided to hit send on my submission. It turned out that Delicious Delay was a better fit for Decadent’s main line, but that’s a separate story.

Liar, Liar features Devin McQueen, a kick-ass heroine who works as a victim’s advocate (Side Note: I think she and Nulli from More Than Strangers would get along swimmingly). She prefers safe predicable men (don’t we all?), but that changes when she meets the gun-wielding (and rather lickable) hunk on Alexa’s cover. You can find out more about him in the blurb below.

Unable to protect her mother from her father as a child, Devin McQueen has made it her mission as an adult to protect as many abused women and children as she can. The rare moments she’s not consumed with work as a victims’ advocate, she limits her involvements to safe, predictable men….until she meets bounty hunter Grady Cooper. He is big, bold, brash, and has no problem speaking his mind.

Growing up in a broken home, Grady realized early on that good deeds had a price. To survive, he learned to weigh every decision by what he could gain. Unfortunately, the successful, solitary life he’s worked so hard to create spins out of control when demons from his past shake his confidence. His boss has given him one last chance—bring in Devin’s latest client quickly, and quietly and maybe he’ll still have a job. It didn’t sound unreasonable until he met Devin.

Suddenly, Grady must make a decision: save his career or follow his heart?

My Sexy Summer

She took a long sip from her champagne flute. Her floppy wide-brimmed hat danced in the desert wind. The match was exhilarating—the hard pounding of hooves, the crack of mallet against ball. Within seconds players raced from one end of the field to the other, chasing an elusive white target smaller than their fists. The even grass stood in stark contrast to sandy dunes. Spectators milled about as waiters circulated glass-filled trays carrying copious amounts of alcohol.

This is the first paragraph from my recent contemporary romance release, More Than Strangers. It was inspired by an actual summer day I spent in Dubai not so long ago. It had been over a hundred degrees Fahrenheit at the equestrian club, but I remember being surrounded by beautiful people who looked like they had just walked out of a Polo Ralph Loren photo shoot.

Since I have an active imagination, I couldn’t help but wonder what would happen if one of those gorgeous women slipped away with a polo player after the match. Tall and lanky, with sweat-drenched hair, rippling muscles, and intense gazes, those guys were certainly sigh-worthy. The romance author in me filled in a back story. A man who could afford to own those gorgeous pampered ponies would be rich and powerful, and he probably wouldn’t object to sneaking a kiss or two by the stables.

And thus my quick little novella set in Dubai was born–it acquired some suspense by the end, but the beginning is all about a sexy summer day in a scorching Middle Eastern desert. (My actual day was less sexy, but still quite fun.)

And this concludes my stop on the blog hop. Check out the other participants by clicking the Summer Seduction Blog Hop banner (or here). The blog stop right after mine is Romance Author Krista Ames.

JustRomance.Me – A Midsummer’s Night Dream-Man Blog Hop – More Than Strangers (Safe Harbor Book 1)

[Edited: Congrats to Jowanna K. for winning a copy of Tower in the Woods along with a few other prizes!]

If you came upon this post by accident but would like to join the fun, just click the banner at the bottom of this post and you can start at the beginning. There are lots of prizes up for grabs (including a $50 giftcard and a copy of my very first novella, Tower in the Woods).

My summer romance More than Strangers is being released on July 22nd  (pre-oder at LSbooks now and get 20% off). The dream man in question is named Jason, and he shares a midsummer’s one-night-stand with my heroine in a desert resort in Dubai. His picture is below–keeping scrolling down to read the blurb and a short snippet.

More Than Strangers - Safe Harbour 1

A Contemporary Summer Romance

Scorching desert heat, ice-cold champagne, and a world of opulence—the perfect setting for a one-night stand. Certain they will never meet again, two strangers agree to casual, no-strings sex that turns into something more.

Jason Reynolds has his life mapped out, and it doesn’t include a smart-mouthed redhead on a mission to save the world. A security specialist at the top of his game, he is on the cusp of wealth and power. Love is a distraction he simply can’t afford.

Struggling to bury memories of an unforgettable night, Nulli O’Hara chases her dream to a city fraught with violence and death. Six months later, she becomes a kidnapping target, and Jason is the man sent to keep her safe.

More than Strangers charts the journey of two reluctant lovers from the sands of the Middle East to the slums of South Asia. In a perilous world more exotic than fantasy, Jason and Nulli must fight to live and see their happily ever after.

Content Notes: Spicy, Light BDSM, Descriptive Erotic Sex, Light Bondage, Spanking

He spread his fingers to span her lower back and pressed her body against his. When he relinquished his hold, russet lashes fluttered to reveal her dazed gaze. Her lips were kiss-swollen, and her cheeks were flushed a rosy pink. The sultry look in her deep blue eyes made him certain he could have her here and now.

“If you keep looking at me like that, we’ll get arrested.”

Book Trailer – Warlock’s Pawn – #FantasyRomance #EroticRomance

After Warlock’s Pawn was selected by Goodread’s PNR NaUBA group to be one of July’s books of the month (join the discussion here), I was given the opportunity for my (then non-existent) book trailer to be posted on the group’s main page for a short period.

At first I simply replied saying that I didn’t have a book trailer, but DH owed me a few brownie points (for … err … stuff). Given, he’s a career bureaucrat and didn’t (at the time) know such a thing as book trailers existed, but who am I to scoff at free labor (with iMovie skills)?

So I traded my brownie points for a short video (which can be described as a one minute powerpoint presentation with background music), and thus a book trailer was born. Comments are welcome, though DH has already told me he agreed to make the trailer, not make changes to the trailer. As such, it’s probably going to stay as is until the end of time (I had more than a few critiques of my own, and no amount of nagging could get the man to change make changes).

P.S. If you look very carefully, you might be able to spot me in this video (we didn’t have the budget for stock images). The background music is a Garageband  creation.

The To Be Read Pile – Review: Warlock’s Pawn

Brutally Honest over at The To Be Read Pile just posted a review of Warlock’s Pawn.

Here’s the first two sentences:

This is the second book I’ve read from this author and they’re both really impressive. Warlock’s Pawn is unique, has a solid plot and I see great things in the future if she keeps writing fabulous stories like this.

The full review can be found at:

The Next Big Thing Blog Hop

the next big thingI’ve been tagged in The Next Big Thing blog hop by Eva Lefoy. Her blog post is here

This is an opportunity for authors to talk about what they’re working on. The author answers ten questions about their latest book, and (ideally) tags more authors.

Today, I’m talking about my WIP, which is in the content edits phase. It should be released in the late summer/early fall.

1. What is your working title/title of your book?

More than Strangers (Safe Harbor – Book 1)

2. Where did the idea come from for the book?

Back in February, I did a flash fiction blog post as part of the Absolute Write Blog Chain (read it here). It features Nulli (name borrowed from fellow LSB author Nulli Para Ora) and an unlucky polo player. Not long after it was posted, the characters kept bugging me to write their story. I tend to do whatever my characters tell me to do–it’s essential for my sanity.

3. What genre does your book fall under?

I think it’s a contemporary romance. My husband (and beta reader) is convinced it’s a romantic suspense. I’m waiting to see what my editor decides.

4. Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie rendition?

Chris Hemsworth (Thor) and Amy Adams (Enchanted)

5. What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?

From a Middle Eastern desert to the slums of South Asia, two reluctant lovers fight for their own happily ever after.

(Yes, the story has digressed somewhat from the flash fiction version. But it does start off with the scene at the polo field!)

6. Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?

It was accepted for publication by Liquid Silver Books.

7. How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?

Good question. I started writing it in mid-February, and it was ready for my beta by late-March. I work full-time though, so five weekends plus a few extra hours during the week might be a better way to describe it.

8. What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?

Its an oldie, but Linda Howard’s Mackenzie’s Pleasure comes to mind. It’s a novella, so the length matches. It also features a one night stand, followed by a period of separation, and a danger that brings the hero and heroine back together. Add an alpha male hero and a (if I do say so myself) kick ass heroine, and you’ve got quite a few parallels.

9. Who or what inspired you to write this book?

Not so long ago, I met a real life Nulli (i.e. a public health worker heading a TB-testing initiative in South Asia). The encounter was very brief, but I knew the moment we met I had to write a story about what she was doing.

10. What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest?

If you like sex scenes with just a bit a kink and lots of heat, I’m your girl.

I’m tagging the following authors to play along with me:

Ramblings on Online Book Promotion (and a plug for the Warlock’s Pawn Virtual Book Tour)

So I decided to give book promotion a whirl a while back, mainly because I’m a curious cat. My day-job contract ends in July, after which I anticipate feeling extremely uncomfortable spending any money on book promotion at all. In short, I came to a do-it-now or do-it-in-a-few-years point, and I erred on the side of trying everything once.

Why have I been and continue to be leery of book promotion?

Most new authors (unless they’re extremely lucky) make close to nothing off their first few books.  This conclusion is  based entirely my interpretation of average sales data satistics coupled with an observation of my own buying habits.  Considering the sheer numbers of ebooks being published on any given day, my two novellas are teeny tiny little fish in an ocean full of sharks and whales. I won’t get my first royalty statement until June, but I’m not anticipating much.

As such, I can only assume any money spent on book promotion will be not be recovered. For some reason, physchologically speaking, there is a huge difference between spending “time” writing a book and spending “money” promoting a book. In reality, the opportunity cost equation is not so stark. Time spent means not watching TV after work and on weekends; money spent means not buying coffee for a few weeks. I can live with both sacrifices but the latter somehow feels more of a commitment than the former.

On top of that, I like writing. I don’t like asking people to buy my book. Some days, I feel like I’m standing at a street corner yelling “buy my book” at the top of my lungs knowing full well 99/100 people will walk by. Of course, the 1/100th person is what all new authors hope for. If one person likes your book, they might recommend it to someone else, and word of mouth is the only proven way books sell.

What are my impressions on self-promotion thus far?

Someone said this much better in the Absolute Write forums: “It is impossible to quantify the effects of marketing.” Since I don’t get a royalty statement until months after said marketing, it definitely feels like I am tossing money and time into a bottomless pit from whence it will never return. Therefore, I’m glad I decided beforehand exactly what my budget is and how long after publication I’m going to spend on promotion. I’m also relieved I decided going in I am doing it for the experience rather than sales. I wanted to know what online promotion entails and how much I feel comfortable taking on. I’ve achieved exactly that.

The few things I am now certain are sustainable in the long term are: Blogging, Twitter and being active on Goodreads. The only reason this is so is because they are all things I would do whether or not I’m trying to promote a book. I’m an avid reader, so joining Goodreads and discovering books comes naturally. I enjoy all types of writing (including bureaucratic and politically correct emails), and writing short fiction or rambling on about one topic or another on my blog comes naturally to me. Twitter is a fun way to network with other people who share the same passions and problems I do, and I would keep it up even if it doesn’t sell a single book. I’m still on the fence about everything else.

Working on  a virtual book tour has been a surprisingly fun experience. I got to do what I do best–write. Guest blogs and interviews utilize an entirely different skill set from fiction writing since I do try to reveal as much about myself as I feel comfortable. I started by adding the banner picture on my website. The girl in red is actually ‘lil old me during a past “Snowpocalypse.” It was a particularly nostalgic photo since I haven’t seen snow in close to three years.

So what book promotion am I doing right now?

This blog post started out as a plug for the Virtual Book Tour for Warlock’s Pawn, and it has since veered off into a general rambling about the concept of book promotion in general. However, it does seem necessary to return to the intial point.

I’ll be updating this post with all my stops. Hopefully you’ll find some of them to be fun reads. If you’ve gotten this far, you might as well participate in the Giveaway. A $10 gift card will go to someone, and it might as well be you. The first entry involves commenting on either this blog or any of the guest posts in the virtual tour, and the other steps are optional.
