13 Reasons to be an Erotic Romance Writer (Absolute Write Blog Chain – January 2013)

This post is part of the January 2013 Blog Chain at Absolute Write. This month’s prompt is “the number 13″.

Here are my 13 reasons be an erotic romance writer:

13. You can work anywhere – all you need is a laptop (though wifi is a plus).

12. You can claim other erotic romances as business expenses on your tax returns.

11. Watching an HBO series on TV can be safely considered as work (especially if you are taking notes).

10. If your significant other catches you drooling over a picture of Aleksandr Skarsgard, you can tell him/her you’re just using the actor as a model for your MMC.

9. You get to shock people every time someone asks “What do you do for a living?”

8. If someone sees porn in your internet browsing history, you can tell them it’s research.

7. You get to look up a all the different ways to describe a penis.

6. Ditto breasts.

5. Ditto vagina.

4. You have an excuse to look up BDSM equipment. How else will you become the next E.L. James?

3. You get to have quasi-serious discussions on writer’s forums about oral sex.

2. You can tell your significant other that leaving you alone to work on your manuscript is in his/her best interest (and they actually believe you).

1. Your parents NEVER ask you about your work.

  1. Lol! This is funny! Number 9 is my favorite. I don’t write erotica, but I want to say it now just for fun.

  2. Ha! Good post. That was funny….well, and true. Crap. That means you have way cooler tax write offs too. Do you itemize? Bet that’s fun for the tax man to read. 🙂

  3. I don’t use wifi or even a lap top. Just old desk top PC.

  4. @Krystal – I’ve only done it a couple of times, but it was fun. (Note: Only did this with people I bumped into at a hotel and didn’t think I’d likely meet again anytime soon).
@HistorySleuth – I’m thinking of itemizing this year. The accountant we use is snowy-haired and semi-retired. He’s so old-school he sends us handwritten notes after filing our taxes. Perhaps he won’t look at my “business expenses” too closely 🙂
@Lisa. I’m a Mac girl, but the image of you tapping away at an old desktop PC is very romantic.

  6. The next EL James? I’d hope to do better than that… 🙂 I always claim that porn is research, even if not writing an erotic fiction at the time. Though Mr Skarsgard has never caught my eye (not my type…) so maybe I am not truly erotic romance writing material 🙂

  7. I was referring to Ms. James’ success. Oddly enough, despite writing erotic romance, I’ve never actually read her book.

  8. Hahaha…I’d never write or read erotic romance (erotic cakes, maybe), but this is a funny list. And hey, romance represents 2/3 of all new books accepted for publication, with erotic romance exploding in popularity and percentage…so I’m sure you’ll be laughing all the way to the band soon enough 🙂
