Science Fiction and Fantasy Saturday #2 – Tower in the Woods

Continuing from last week, this snippet is also from Tower in the Woods, my soon-to-be released post-apocalyptic zombie romance. It is based on the Grimm’s fairy tale Rapunzel. Last week’s snippet can be found here.

The kickback was absorbed squarely against Nel’s shoulder, an impact she was practically numb to, having been taught to use the weapon since she was six. She had been told that the accuracy of the rifle was within two inches and that its maximum effective range was eight hundred and seventy-five yards. However, Nel had been making shots at over a thousand yards for the past five years, and her accuracy was closer to one inch than two.

One by one, Nel lodged .300 Winchester Magnums into the heads of the zombies gaining on the bleeding human. Each time she squeezed the trigger she made a single-shot kill.

  1. She sounds awesome! A zom-rom – brilliant, I can’t wait to read more 🙂

  2. Thumbs up for gunning down zombies. Classic! My snippet in over on my website as usual. I have to stop forgetting to add my name to the list.

  3. Great stuff…and an interesting twist, going for a zombie romance.

  4. Knocking off zombies at 1000 yards – sweet! And it sounds like just another day at the office for her. That and the obligatory bleeding human that gives her the opportunity to squeeze off some rounds. That description says a lot about the world you’ve created for them. Great Snippet!

  5. Poor Zombies. They never stood a chance.

  6. Is her accuracy the result of practice, or some kind of mental power?

  7. Love a zombie-killing, sharpshooting heroine. 🙂

  8. Best to kill zombies from extreme range, IMHO. Good work.

  9. Wow! Good stuff here!! Can’t wait to read it all.

  10. I’d hate to be facing her!

  11. Ohmygod, this is my kind of story! Fairytales? Zombies? Yes, please! Have added it to my Goodreads TBR list!

  12. I love the premise of this and the snippet is fantastic. She’s so focused. Wonderful detail and characterization. I am in.

  13. Seen the cover of this around for a little while now, and reading a snippet just adds to my WANT to read.
